Video - MTV Week In Rock Interview from 1995

This clip has recently appeared on YouTube and is probably new for many of us.

Your new video is set in a gym, so that’s where we’ll interview you is a 90s MTV vibe.

Important content to watch for: “Someone recently described my singing as bird-like…”

This is one of a few vintage clips that have appeared online of late, including this quirky Blender interview from the same era and a lip-synced JH3 performance of Spin The Bottle from UK show The Beat.

Thanks to Carlos for keeping an eye on YouTube for these links.

Upcoming Livestream Performance #4 - How To Walk Away (Solo Acoustic / Electric) - March 20, 2021

The 4th in Juliana’s monthly livestream shows will feature her 2008 album How To Walk Away.

Writing at her official site, Juliana says:

I am going to set up both an acoustic and an electric guitar, though I won't be playing them both at the same time (I only have two hands, unfortunately).

The show is scheduled for March 20, 2021 (back to a Saturday slot).

This will again be 4pm local time for Juliana, but time zone aficionados will note this will be in Eastern Daylight Time, so Europeans should consult their calendars. (For instance in the UK we will still be on GMT making this an hour earlier than usual for us at 8pm London time).

You know the score by now but for newbs the show will be live on Q Division’s YouTube channel and stay online for a couple of weeks, with pay what you like PayPal donations taken via julianahatfield.com

While you wait for this show you can read all about the album with the 2008 track-by-track review and more info than you’ll ever need on the How To Walk Away archive page, part of the ongoing revamp of the discography section.

Local H: The LIFERS Podcast - Episode 2 - Juliana Hatfield

We recorded the last episode so we could record this episode. The second punch in our opening podcasting salvo features our first real guest — the great Juliana Hatfield. Super-fan Gabe tries to hold it together while Scott does his best not to go full-on Chris Farley Show. Topics include: The art of looper pedals, the time Juliana and her band taught Scott how to ski, the great rock and roll restroom dilemma — and Ben drops some of his serious Robbie Benson knowledge. We’re getting there, folks. This is an excellent listen following on from Juliana’s appearance in Local H’s latest video this week. The band are super knowledgeable about Juliana’s career and she’s clearly having a fun chat with fellow musicians.

Among other topics discussed are a couple of albums in contention for the next livestream, the possibility of Only Everything featuring in future gigs (full band and even solo in the UK), and some tantalising legal updates on the God’s Foot saga.

A hugely recommended listen, available above and all the usual places you get your podcasts including Apple Podcasts, Spotify, and Overcast.

Upcoming Livestream Performance #3 - Only Everything (Solo Electric) - February 21, 2021

They come around so quickly, these livestreams.

Juliana, writing at her official site:

For this third installment I will perform, at Q Division Studios, my “Only Everything” album, start to finish, by myself with an electric guitar and a loop pedal, which will enable me to play some guitar solos over some looped chord progressions (trust me, it'll be fun). It will be broadcast via the Q Division YouTube channel .

The scheduled time is 4pm EST on February 21, 2021. That's the same time of day as before (9pm GMT, 10pm CET) but a different day of the week (it's a Sunday) just to keep us alert.

To help prepare for the show you can familiarise yourself with the majesty of the album with original press reviews and more on the Only Everything discography page:

The solo electric with loop pedal feel will bring back memories for those of us who attended Juliana's European shows in 2006. Check out Carsten and Lieve's excellent photos from back then:

The Mysteries of Life - Blue Jay (featuring Juliana vocals)

Featuring Juliana on vocals, here's a new track from The Mysteries of Life (Jake Smith & Freda Love Smith.)

The single is available now on Bandcamp and is the title track of their forthcoming album (their first since 2006.)

There's an Indiegogo funding campaign for the album which includes options to also buy Freda's book and get signed drumsticks.

New Album Details - Blood - Release Due May 2021, Orders Available Now

American Laundromat Records are set to release Juliana's new album Blood on May 14, 2021. Fabulous!

There's a single out now. Here's Mouthful Of Blood:

American Laundromat Records:

“Blood” is Juliana’s 19th solo studio album of originals, and a deep dive into the dark side. The album is a brutal and critical look at modern human psychology and behavior; at personal and societal sickness. “I think these songs are a reaction to how seriously and negatively a lot of people have been affected by the past four years,” says Juliana. “But it’s fun, musically. There’s a lot of playing around. I didn’t really have a plan when I started this project.”

ALR's order page has more details (the album was recorded mostly at Juliana's home into her laptop and Jed Davis’ home in Connecticut).

There's also more JH quotes ("Sophisticated but catchy. Challenging but danceable.")

In 'Bed' - with Juliana Hatfield - Punk Girl Diaries
Screenshot 2021-01-23 at 21.12.36.png

Lene Cortina, writing at Punk Girl Diaries with a review of last weekend's Bed livestream:

Internet shows like this can deliver those little things that are often lost or inaudible at a traditional show; guitar tuning, commentary and asides that an audience is not always privy to or the words get lost in the space between the artist and PA system. What artists maybe don’t realise is that the audience knows pretty well how you sound singing, but we also love to learn how you talk, and what do you say?

Lene goes on to account some of Juliana's between song chat.

Juliana Hatfield hits rewind for album webcasts | Boston Herald
bed.jpg

Juliana, discussing "Bed" in an interview with Brett Milano for Boston Herald ahead of today's acoustic livestream:

...I realized that the only time I feel power is when I’m making music. So it was an explosion of frustration, but also an abandonment of my past life and the start of doing whatever the hell I wanted to. I can have loud annoying feedback at the beginning of a song, I can stack together five vocal takes that don’t really fit together, and nobody is going to stop me.

The interview includes a bit more about what to expect with the new "shockingly dark" Blood album, and that the next covers project remains likely to focus on R.E.M.

Upcoming Acoustic Livestream Performance #2 - Bed - January 23, 2021

After the Become What You Are extravaganza, Juliana has announced that there will be another full LP acoustic performance from Q Division Studios on Saturday January 23, 2021 at 4pm EST. (The same hour as before so that’s 9pm GMT / 10pm CET.)

She’s chosen 1998’s Bed, a big fan favourite.

This will be the 2nd time Juliana has played it in its entirety, following her 20th anniversary full band performance in May 2018 at The Burren in Somerville. (photos from that show are here)

Once again this will be a pay what you want show, available free to view on Q Division’s YouTube channel.

Update, January 2021: it seems the video has now been removed (as planned)

I'm sure most visitors to this site saw this over the weekend, but here's the full livestream of Juliana performing Become What You Are as broadcast on December 19, 2020 from Q Division Studios.

A memorable performance (twice!) and a huge success.

For Juliana's director's cut version, start at 1:00:30, then after she finishes I Got No Idols at 1:39:57 skip back to 49:13 for a two song seasonal encore, then return to 1:39:57 for the chat 😛 It's worth noting that the video is not intended to be kept available on YouTube in perpetuity and Q Division may remove it in the next few days. For now though don't forget this was a pay what you want show so visit Juliana's PayPal to donate. The link is in the video description on Q Division's YouTube.
Upcoming Acoustic Livestream Performance of Become What You Are - Dec 19, 2020

Juliana will perform her 1993 classic album Become What You Are in a solo acoustic broadcast from Q Division Studios on Saturday December 19, 2020 at 4pm EST (that's a European friendly 9pm GMT / 10pm CET, yay)

It will be available live on Q Division's YouTube channel and thereafter for an unspecified period for those who can't make that time. update: As of January 2021, the video has been removed.

Writing on her official website, Juliana says:

There is no set ticket price—you can pay what you want, or not. It is up to you. Since none of us—artists nor audiences—can have in-person concerts until who knows when, I am hoping that some of you will be able to contribute something, which will help generate some of that lost touring income. But I understand that a lot of you are struggling financially and I want everyone to be able to see the show—so if you can’t pay, that’s okay!

Head to julianahatfield.com to read more of Juliana's note and the PayPal information.

#paywhatyouwant4becomewhatyouare is not the official hashtag because I've just made it up.

Fabulous news. I'm sure we're all looking forward to this Christmas treat.

Beabadoobee: “I think what really helped me was the tunings I find, and the alternate tunings we play in” | Guitar World

From an interview with beabadoobee by Matt Doria for Guitar World:

[GW] I was reading earlier about how your parents raised you on a healthy diet of bands like The Smiths, The Cranberries and Sonic Youth. Would you say rock music has always been a core part of your DNA?

[B] My mum used to play a lot of artists like Alanis Morissette, and I think because that was always in the background of my childhood, and having her play all these amazing women from around that time, that really kind of paved the way for how I found music growing up. And then the friends I met and the music we used to talk about and listen to, that’s when I found The Smiths and The Cure – and then I found Pavement and Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine… I was just progressively weaving my way into it. And now I’m back on everything that was in the background of my childhood, like Alanis Morissette, Suzanne Vega, Juliana Hatfield – and y’know, finding bands like Veruca Salt and all these artists that continue to inspire me… I just love music, man.

I hear all of these influences in beabadoobee's music, particularly Juliana and Veruca Salt.

From Juliana Hatfield, a couple of slightly askew holiday tunes - The Boston Globe
20201123_boston_globe.jpg

James Sullivan, writing for The Boston Globe where he interviews Juliana about this week's holiday themed 7 inch single for Record Store Day Black Friday in the US:

For Hatfield, most Christmas music is like wallpaper.

“I’ve never really actively sought it out,” she says, “but it’s not unpleasant.” She’s fond of the “Charlie Brown Christmas” soundtrack — the Vince Guaraldi Trio’s “Christmas Time Is Here” is being reissued on vinyl as another Record Store Day exclusive — and the “warm, fuzzy feeling” triggered by certain carols, such as “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen.”

“‘Tidings of comfort and joy’ — that’s just a really nice line.”

But the B-side of her single, “Red Poinsettia,” might hint at her next project, which is a little darker than your typical Christmas jingle. The title suggests another seasonal trimming, but the lyrics reveal it’s a red herring.

“In my mind, it’s the Christmas murder ballad,” she says.

Sting’s Son Joe Sumner Releases New Song ‘Hope,’ All-Star Video to Encourage Voting - Rolling Stone

Jon Blistein, writing for Rolling Stone:

Joe Sumner, frontman of Fiction Plane and son of Sting, has shared a new song, “Hope,” along with a short celebrity-filled clip to encourage voter turnout ahead of the 2020 elections.

...

As a last-minute get-out-the-vote effort, Sumner corralled a variety of celebrities and musicians to cover the song, which he then cut into a big collage video. The clip features Sting, Ben Folds, Joe Scarborough, Mika Brzezinski, Corey Glover, Gaby Moreno, the Fantastic Negrito, Barnaby Bright, Aja, Ace of Cups, Juliana Hatfield, Rain Phoenix, Patti Scialfa, Rocky Duwani, Richard Marx, Southside Johnny and Christian Hebel.

Blink and you'll miss JH, but she's there.

Here's the full non-celeb version:

Sending love and hope to all my friends in the US this week.
