New Single - Telephone Line

Telephone Line is the third single from the upcoming Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO album, available in all the usual places including Spotify and Apple Music.

Juliana:

Some people might not know what a busy signal is and might not comprehend what it means not to be able to leave a message; what it means to feel essentially unable to communicate. But I do and it has nothing to do with technology. ‘Telephone Line’ is really just an expression of an isolation and a loneliness which music helps to make more bearable.

New Single and Video - Can't Get It Out Of My Head

Juliana’s new single Can’t Get it Out Of My Head is out now.

The video is directed by David Doobinin who is quoted in a press release:

“I created cutout versions of Juliana to create layered, architectural visuals. I wanted the video to capture that restless, ‘caught between two worlds’ experience we all feel sometimes, while also highlighting Juliana’s raw and poetic nature, and how she embodies both awkwardness and grace.”

Juliana:

“David is really good at capturing my discomfort in front of cameras, and in the world. Making it all into interesting, moving imagery works great in the context of this song about longing to escape reality into some otherworldly realm.”

The song is the 2nd track released from the upcoming Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO album and it’s lovely.

New Album Details - Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO - Release scheduled for November 2023

Juliana's 3rd album in the “Sings” series following tributes to Olivia Newton-John and The Police is scheduled for November 17, 2023 via American Laundromat Records, titled "Juliana Hatfield Sings ELO"

Here's the first single, "Don't Bring Me Down" :

The song is available now on streaming services including Apple Music and Spotify.

Juliana:

ELO songs were always coming on the radio when I was growing up. They were a reliable source of pleasure and fascination (except for “Fire On High” which scared the heck out of me). With this album of covers I wanted to get my hands deep into some of the massive ‘70’s hits but I am also shining a light on some of the later work (“Ordinary Dream” from 2001’s “Zoom” album, “Secret Messages” and “’From The End Of The World”, both from the ‘80’s).

Thematically, I identify with the loneliness and alienation and the outerspace-iness in the songs I chose. (I have always felt like I am part alien, not fully belonging to or in this Earth world.) Sonically, ELO recordings are like an amusement park packed with fun musical games with layers and layers of varied, meticulous parts for your ears to explore; production curiosities; huge, gorgeous stacks of awe-inspiring vocal harmony puzzles. My task was to try and break all the things down and reconstruct them subtly until they felt like mine.

Overall, I stuck pretty close to the originals’ structures while figuring out new ways to express or reference the unique and beloved ELO string arrangements. An orchestra would have been difficult or impossible for me to manage to record, nor did I think there was any point in trying to copy those parts as they originally were. Why not try to reimagine them within my zone of limitations? In some cases, I transposed string parts onto guitars, or keyboards, and I even sung some of them (as in “Showdown” and “Bluebird Is Dead”).

Recording the album was a kind of complicated and drawn-out process since I was doing all of my tracks at home in my bedroom (drums and bass were done by Chris Anzalone and Ed Valauskas, respectively [in their own recording spaces]), and I kept running into technology problems that would frustrate me and slow me up. But eventually I got it all done. A labor of love

Juliana’s ELO History

Juliana previously covered 'Sweet Is The Night' on her 2012 eponymous lp and the credits for this new album suggest that elements of that recording may be in the 2023 version.

Juliana also covered a Jeff Lynne song with 'Xanadu' on 2018’s 'Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John.'

New Album Details - Blood - Release Due May 2021, Orders Available Now

American Laundromat Records are set to release Juliana's new album Blood on May 14, 2021. Fabulous!

There's a single out now. Here's Mouthful Of Blood:

American Laundromat Records:

“Blood” is Juliana’s 19th solo studio album of originals, and a deep dive into the dark side. The album is a brutal and critical look at modern human psychology and behavior; at personal and societal sickness. “I think these songs are a reaction to how seriously and negatively a lot of people have been affected by the past four years,” says Juliana. “But it’s fun, musically. There’s a lot of playing around. I didn’t really have a plan when I started this project.”

ALR's order page has more details (the album was recorded mostly at Juliana's home into her laptop and Jed Davis’ home in Connecticut).

There's also more JH quotes ("Sophisticated but catchy. Challenging but danceable.")

Juliana Announces New 7-inch Holiday Single For November 2020

Juliana has announced a new 7-inch single to be released for Record Store Day's Black Friday event on November 27, 2020, restricted to US stores.

On transparent magenta coloured vinyl, the single will have two original "holiday" songs - Christmas Cactus and Red Poinsettia.

Red Poinsettia is all new. Christmas Cactus is a new version of a song which dates back to 2016, when it was briefly available as a home recording at Juliana's official site, and it has been played live several times since.

Here's a version from 2017 (at 3:13 after Choose Drugs):

After premiering yesterday at billboard, Next To You from the forthcoming Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police album is now available more widely including Soundcloud and streaming / download services.

Juliana Hatfield Covers an Underappreciated Classic From The Police: Premiere | billboard

The second track to be released from Juliana's upcoming album of The Police songs is Next to You.

It premiered today at billboard, where Gary Graff has asked Juliana about the project:

"Next to You," the first track from the Police's 1978 debut album Outlandos d'Amour, presented a challenge for Hatfield, however. "It really was an intuitive reworking of that," says Hatfield, who abandoned "an awful '80s metal ballad" version of the song before settling on this version. "Their recording of it is so perfect in its imperfection. It's unpolished and raw; That whole album sounds like three guys bashing out a song in a room together. So I didn't even want to attempt to do a rocking version of it like that. I don't want it to be compared to the original. There's no way I could come close. So I just went in a completely different direction and slowed down to half time."

New Album Announced - Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police

Juliana is releasing another covers tribute album, following the success of her 2018 tribute to Olivia Newton-John.

Scheduled for November 15, 2019 via American Laundromat Records, it's titled "Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police."

The first song has already been released. Here's De Do Do Do, De Da Da Da:

Juliana Hatfield shares the first single from her new album "Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police" due out November 15, 2019 on American Laundromat Records. Pre-order at www.alr-music.com

Juliana:

With "Juliana Hatfield Sings The Police" I am continuing the project that I started last year with my "Juliana Hatfield Sings Olivia Newton-John" album. I hope to continue to go deep into covering artists that were important to me in my formative years. The songs I’ve chosen seem to resonate in the present moment. “Rehumanize Yourself”, “Landlord”, and “Murder By Numbers” explore ugly kinds of nationalism, abuses of power, and the mendacity of large swaths of the ruling class. And then there are the timeless, relatable psychodramas: “Every Breath You Take”, “Can’t Stand Losing You”, “Canary In A Coalmine”. In the Police, each player’s style was so distinctive, accomplished and unique that I didn’t even attempt to match any of it; for anyone to try and play drums like Stewart Copeland would be a thankless, pointless task that is bound to fail. Instead, I simplified and deconstructed, playing a lot of the drums myself, in my rudimentary, caveman style. Chris Anzalone (Roomful Of Blues) played the rest of the drums. Ed Valauskas (the Gravel Pit) and I each played about half of the bass parts, while I did all the guitars and keyboards. I listened to a lot of the Police when I was preparing and making this album, and their recordings are as refreshing and exciting as ever. I hope that my interpretations of these songs can inspire people to keep loving the Police like I did, and still do.

Juliana Hatfield Announces New Album Weird and Shares First Single – American Laundromat Records

New album info time!

It's called Weird and is due for release on January 18, 2019.

Here's the first single - It's So Weird:

The new album by Juliana Hatfield featuring 11 brand new tracks. Available January 18, 2019 on CD, LP, CD, DL via www.alr-music.com

From American Laundromat Records blog post:

Freda Love Smith (Blake Babies, Sunshine Boys) and Todd Philips (Lemonheads, The Juliana Hatfield Three) each played drums on multiple songs while Hatfield played all of the other instruments (and some additional drums).

Album Bio:

Laura Fisher has written liner notes as an "Album Bio", which is effectively the first review. An excerpt:

Why wouldn’t you want to block out the world? Hatfield asks us. Outside the home are people who misread your facial expressions (“Staying In”), whose gestures of love feel like efforts to possess you (“It’s So Weird”), who drag you into a vortex of lies and gaslighting (“Paid to Lie”), and who have allowed every last shred of human experience to be commodified, from dignity, religion, and privacy to fake IDs and opioids (“Everything’s For Sale”). Outside the glowing orb of independence are other people’s demands, their power plays, their lies and misinterpretations. Who needs it?

Audio - Wonder Why

Juliana is back with 14 brand new songs on her new album "Pussycat" out April 28th on American Laundromat Records. Available on CD, LP and Cassette. Limited Edition Peach and Pink vinyl bundles available exclusively at www.alr-music.com

Wonder Why is the second track to be revealed from next month's Pussycat album.

It premiered today at Consequence of Sound, where there's also an interview by Ben Kaye including Juliana's comments on this new song:

(CoS) Can you talk a bit about “Wonder Why”? Specifically, what was the songwriting process for this one like in particular, and what was the message you wanted to get across?

(JH) “Wonder Why” is different than the rest of the songs on the album in terms of its subject matter. It is very nostalgic. It is memories from the 1970’s when I was a child. Colors and furniture and TV shows and movies and events specific to my experience of that era soothe me, somehow. It’s escapism and lately escapism is more important to me than ever. In my mind I go back there to my childhood and it comforts me. And even the melody is reminiscent of the great AM radio pop hits of the 1970’s. It’s a little bit ELO or something. Not intentionally but just because that era and its music and feeling is really ingrained in my psyche. Some of the details in the song are factually incorrect because I needed certain words to fit and to rhyme. My childhood kitchen, for example, was light blue and not avocado green.
