Juliana Hatfield / Wild Animals — PledgeMusic campaign

Juliana Hatfield's 2013 PledgeMusic campaign for a mostly acoustic solo album, with archive material, original art, direct-access rewards, a supporter livestream and stated support for two animal shelters.

Juliana launched her third PledgeMusic project on June 2, 2013, for the album which became Wild Animals (2013). She described the record as “mostly (but not totally) acoustic”, with the loose energy of Bed, less distortion and “more prettiness”.

Welcome to my new baby. It's not done yet, but with your help, it will be fully formed and ready to leave home by the end of the summer.

The supporter-first MP3 and FLAC release arrived on 2 August. Hatfield wrote:

I sincerely hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed assembling it in my little back room with the bird songs coming in through the windows.

Animal welfare

This campaign named Save a Sato in Puerto Rico and the Northeast Animal Shelter in Salem, Massachusetts. The campaign allocated 5% of money raised after the goal to the two shelters, whose work included finding homes for abused and abandoned animals and supporting spaying and neutering.

Music updates

Juliana did not provide progress updates about the album's development in contrast to previous PledgeMusic campaigns.

She did share random nuggets from her career though, including demos of demos of “Tourist”, "Only In The Dark", "Until Tomorrow" (titled as "Heaven Tomorrow", an 'avant lsd mix' of "I Got Not Idols", and a cover of The Beatles "Revolution".

Her PledgeMusic artist profile page also had a previously unreleased recording of a song titled "Miles Away". After fans commented on how it shared the melody of a song with the same name by The Verve Pipe which does not have a Juliana songwriting credit, Juliana said:

“I also wanted to tell you that “miles away”, the song that is streaming, was from the same songwriting session--with brian vander ark--that produced the song “table for one” which was released as an extra track on my “gold stars” album in 2002. brian and i also wrote a third song together, which i might play you at some point. my memory is notoriously bad but i think what happened was that brian maybe wrote the music and i wrote the lyrics (and title), or most of them, to the version that is streaming here--and then brian rewrote a set of lyrics and that is maybe the version on the verve pipe album--so i wouldn’t have been credited (and you can’t copyright a title--which is why i could name my new album sergeant pepper’s lonely hearts club band, or chinese democracy, or marquee moon,,,) ..and all is right with the world….”

The private acoustic livestream for PledgeMusic supporters took place on August 10, 2013. Requests from pledgers made up most of the set.
