The Verve Pipe song

Juliana’s Miles Away song was available to stream on her PledgeMusic profile page in 2013 around the time of her campaign for the Wild Animals album. Fans noticed that it had the same melody but different lyrics to Miles Away by The Verve Pipe, released in 2001 on their album Underneath, and wondered why Juliana did not have a songwriting credit on their song. Juliana explained at the time, writing at PledgeMusic (referring to The Verve Pipe's Brian Vander Ark):

“my memory is notoriously bad but i think what happened was that brian maybe wrote the music and i wrote the lyrics (and title), or most of them, to the version that is streaming here--and then brian rewrote a set of lyrics and that is maybe the version on the verve pipe album--so i wouldn’t have been credited (and you can’t copyright a title--which is why i could name my new album sergeant pepper’s lonely hearts club band, or chinese democracy, or marquee moon,,,) ..and all is right with the world….”

Juliana’s recollection is backed up by an interview with Brian Vander Ark in 2001 at Ink 19, where he mentioned the song:

“It used to be called “Either Way,” for awhile. Then I sent it to my friend, Juliana Hatfield; she’s a great songwriter and I’m a huge fan. So I sent it to her and I said, “What would you do with the lyric here, maybe you can do something with this,” and I just sent her the music and the melody. She came back with it, she did a demo for it where she sang “Miles Away” and I thought, “oh, that’s awesome!” I took it back and I was like, “Would you mind if I took the ‘Miles Away’ idea and rewrote the lyrics?” And she was like “Have at it.” It ended up being great.”
