You Are The Camera

Excerpts from a now deleted blog post from Juliana on her official site in 2008:

“You Are The Camera” was my attempt to explore the vanity, artifice, shallowness, meanness/selfishness/coldness/heartlessness/dis- honesty of the entertainment business and to admit my own guilt, shame, and embarrassment at being part of this system that exploits women/people and their art.

Sonically and structurally I was trying, with this song, to be “arty” and “rock” and kind of difficult and obscure. I thought it would come across as “cool,” to do things that were not expected or understood. I didn’t want the song to go down easy like pop. So I did things like making the melody different in each verse — and making the melody indiscernible in the third verse. And making the intro chord transitioning into the first verse chord a tritone (otherwise known as an augmented fourth — the sound of a European ambulance) — an unpretty interval.
