My So-Called Life

Make It Home featured in So-Called Angels, the 1994 Christmas episode of the US television show My So-Called Life. The song was commissioned by the show’s production team, who were writing for the character of an angelic homeless girl. They later cast Juliana in the role.

Juliana wrote about the experience in a blog post in 2008 which has now been deleted. An excerpt:

I utilized part of the melody of “Silent Night” — in the verses, over some sad/pretty chords — and a piece of “O Come All Ye Faithful” in the bridge, and it worked like a charm (if I do say so myself). Just the right combination of pathos and hope. The TV people liked it a lot.

In 2016, Juliana was one of several contributors to a retrospective article at Elle: The Agony and the Angst: An Oral History of My So-Called Life:

I remember Jared kind of following me around on set and watching me a lot. I think he was interested in me as a person who made a living in music; he really wanted to make music and I got that sense that he was really serious about it. We kind of became pals after that. He was in my apartment a couple times in New York, just hanging out, and he would pick up my acoustic guitar and start singing and playing, and I would just kind of swat him away. I didn't think his music was going to go anywhere. Like, oh god, another actor with a guitar.
